The Ryelands Estate is in the Skerton area of Lancaster , seperated from the city by the river Lune, the Ryelands Estate was built in 1932/6 along with other estates to house Lancaster's ever-growing population and the clearance of the city centre slums.

The first tenants moved in around the end of 1932, before the estate and the roads were finished. The roads on the estate were basically dirt tracks and most of the estate was still a building site, despite this people were eager to move out of there slum dwellings and move onto the estate. All the houses were fitted out with bathrooms, hot and cold running water, inside toilets and fitted kitchens.

These houses council owned and fairly rented were a luxury for the people who came out of the slum clearances in the city centre. I come from Oldham near Manchester and we did not get these type of houses till the late sixties, in fact our house in Oldham was a private house with only one cold tap in the kitchen and an outside deep toilet, I had to live with these conditions until 1972.
